merc misfire or possibly autobox problems?
« on: March 10, 2008, 10:11:50 AM »
car seems to be misfiring or doin something, when you floor it the car is really struggling to accelerate, altho it seems to rev up nice in neutral, also noticed its using lots more fuel that i had expected.

anyone got any ideas? cos last night i thought id never get home!

could the autobox be fukked or maybe a fuel filter blockage or somethin?

weve had the fuel tank out and run it empty so that could be the cause maybe?

had all the plugs out and they seem to be fine, checked the sparks too.

its the merc 190e.

cheers!
if it breaks, it breaks, and if it aint broke, dont fix it!

could easily be clogged filter if the tank has been disturbed........................... tho that doesnt tie in with more fuel being used. :?:

Could it be something like an air leak?  Mine did some funny business...floor it at 30mph and it literally didn't accelerate, but the "economy" meter bottomed out.  Checked a few hoses and pushed one of them on a bit tighter, and it was all fine and dandy again :)

right, update on this, it still runs crap! ive changed loads of stuff and tried loads of stuff an all ive managed to get it to do it run better, but still with the same fault!!!

the faults concequences have become more obvious however, as the car runs pretty much spot on when cold, but terrible when hot, its not overheating tho. to drive it really struggles to accelerate in any gear, as if something is holding it back, plus i cant help thinking its using alot of fuel.

so, merc boys, do you reckon that it could be something to do with the automatic choke? could it be that once the engine is warm a sensor isnt working that would normally tell the choke to turn off, and hence it drives good cold but shite hot?

if so what can i do to rectify!?

thankyou for your time,

sounds like you got a big air leak on inlet somewhere will run ok when cold coz of cold start running richer when cold start cuts out air leak makes it run lean no power look at vacume pipes n all hoses that come off inlet manifold

I agree with Arnie, it sounds most likely to be a vacuum leak.
I had a similar problem on a Cherokee, we changed loads of hoses, all the injectors, the dealer had it for a diagnostic and changed the plugs, cap and rotor but it made no difference. In the end it turned out to be the coil breaking down when it got warm causing a weak spark. I don't know what kind is on yours but if you can borrow one off something else, it might be worth a try :?:
