neil the whitewall guy came round today, i couldn't resist and had the 20's banded too :), glad i did they look awesome.
He takes the smallest amount off the tyre wall so as to not effect the strength of the tyre wall. In fact its no deeper than the tyre wall itself, he just shaves the letters/numbers off.

i'll certainly use him again.

Wow, they do look good! Result! So this may be the best alternative to buying whitwall tyres then, looks like a pretty simple and quick process too :)

looks really good, especially in red, and i understand the process a bit better now; there's very little material removed so the integrity of the sidewall shouldn't be effected..  Before I was kind of expecting them to cut a channel and fill it with paint, but its almost just like a surface preperation..

im still a bit unsure about "defacing" the sidewall though; i have a sneaky feeling an over zealous copper or mot tester might pull you up on that as some of the markings are required by law

b :)

still well chuffed with them can't wait to put the wires on the a8 and the 356's on the camper. The thin red band on the 20's makes them look like raleigh grifter tyres :)

do you have to change gear by twisting the handbrake lever now?..

if its just rotation and size for the MOT then shouldn't be a problem i guess, for some reason I thought the CE markings and things were a legal requirement too..

Im a bit late on this one I know ,..just my 2p...............In the 70's/'80's there were a couple of s/hand car dealers in the Ilford (essex) area that were doing this to all their nicer for sale cars .Always remember how cool it looked ,and how the cars stood out on the forecourts.
Grew up with Hot Rods,Ed Roth and Gasser Wars.
Grew into Low &Slow,Sleds, and 2-doors

Wowzers! That looks awesome. I'm definitely gonna call this guy. Don't suppose you could reveal how much one set cost? And did he charge for travel etc?

its price on application as it includes fuel costs.....  but to give you an idea he charged me £100 for both sets which included his fuel costs (manchester to stafford)
Give him a bell and he will give you a price over the phone mat.
If you let him know who you work for and what you do i'm sure you will get a discount anyway mr sides

Christoff - sides mean discounts. Seriously, they're the new black, which was the new red.

Nice one Ant. I'm very tempted to hook up a set of tires I really shouldn't. But yours look mighty pretty so fu ck it :)
