Batteries
« on: April 19, 2008, 10:14:32 PM »
Im using a basic  run of the mill battery in my Merc. It was in there, and had recently been replaced, when I bought the car. In the past I would leave it 'til it died on me then sort a new one ,but experience has taught me they can die at any time ,usually in the middle of nowhere ! I feel it has had a good caning what with running the compressors etc,so I think I'll replace it now.Without going into the realms of a second mortgage ,does anyone know what the good reliable makes are? or is it just a case of talking to my local factors? Does a higher capacity mean larger physical size (oo er!)? It has to fit in the normal battery position .Would the standard alternator cope with a higher AMPHR battery?

altenator will be fine.
you want good high/short duration output for your main battery, thats what standard starter batteries are good at so no point paying for anything else.
people will have their favourite makes [Oldham is mine] but get what ever you can locally that has a 3 year warranty that has the highest amp/hr rating.
Most things improve with age................

halfords do decent batteries; they're made by varta or bosch depending on the size apparently..

they do a 2yr waranty on all of the batteries they sell, so every 18months mine (not a halfords own make, as they dont do one to fit) "dies" and gets replaced for free plus another 2yr waranty ;)

i think its only fair seen as the one I paid for was nearly £120

top tips (viz style)

stick the receipt (which is also the guarantee) in a little plastic bag and put it under the battery in the battery tray so you know where it is when it fails in 12 - 18 months time :)

Also, annoy and frustrate SpecSavers staff by wandering up to their counter, squinting your eyes whilst looking up at the price board, and when they ask if they can help you, saying "Big Mac Meal, please."
