Air Suspension on a Grand Cherokee
« on: September 09, 2008, 11:50:05 AM »
Hi there,

Newbie here, got a pointer over this way from rod on the retro rides forum.

I'm looking to fit air suspension to the family 4x4 for access purposes to the boot and cabin. The current setup is coils all round with the rears being seperate from the damper and the fronts being coil over damper. I've been doing research into this and what I can see is the rear end is not such an issue, in terms of fab work, however i'm not keen on relocating the damper on the front suspension. I have seen some airbags on the Universal Air Suspension website which fit straight over the original damper, anyone had any experience of these, or anyone know of a supplier in the uk of a similar product? Finally just a few other questions, what size compressor? what size air tank?

Anyone with any pointers let me know please.

Thanks in advance

Matt

theyare designed to work over struts rather than shocks and would need some degree of fabbing to work but doesnt sound like that would put you off.
UA products are quality.
You need to check the weight of your front end against the capacity of the bag over units, remember that the quoted lift capacity is "direct" and if you mount them where your standard shock is [for example 2/3 the way along an A arm] you only get 2/3 the efective lift.
with your motor I would go for a York engine driven comp and a gallon tank. You dont need much volume capacity for your useage,a york is bullet proof and you have plenty of space and power to drive it. If not a York then a  Viair rated at 200psi min.
The York will almost lift your ride as you want it without a tank, whereas a Viair will be working hard to top the tank back up again
Most things improve with age................

Obviously I want to minimise the amount of equipment I import from the states for cost and spare reasons. Are there any recommended suppliers in the UK where I'll be able to obtain the rear bags, compressor and tank. I think for my install i'll be looking for a electric driven compressor.
