cold start nightmare
« on: September 17, 2008, 03:44:10 PM »
ok, since i got this car i was aware of a starting issue, 1979 cadillac seville, its a 350 oldsmobile rocket V8 with fuel injection, the guy i bought it off told me it would probably need the fuel filter changed, however that is not the case, the syptoms are fuel is not being pumped through when cold, it runs perfectly after about 5 minutes of warming up, I am 95 % sure its one of the sensors, maybe like an idle control or something, I have searched the net but cant really find the problem, bought a haynes manual but its too vague (75-85 full size cadillacs) really i need to identify all the sensors under that bonnet. gotta get it done quick as cold mornings are coming!!
any help greatly appreciated

what makes you think the fuel is not getting through when cold'?
how do you get it warm if you cant start from cold?

I'm sorry if i was vague, i mean its a very reluctant start, its a struggle to keep it running, i'm thinking, you need extra fuel when cold starting for the choke and its the extra fuel i'm not getting. idle is spot on when warm running.

is that one of the models that can turn off some cylinders to save fuel?

seem to remember col had an issue with his starting  and it was the ecu that controlled the shut offs.............

I dont think so, think mine is earlier than that, will look in to that though, if all else fails i'll just replace it for a carb, i'm convinced its a sensor, i just need an illustrated photo of the engine bay, supprised its more of a challenge than i thought.

i guess it should have some sort of idle control valve, check the inlet plenum for carbon build up.
its not mis-firing is it when its cold?

Before the fuel enters the injection set[throttle body]there is a IACvalve mostly found at the front or side of the body, that controls the gas, at cold then at hot.Take it out and check it is at the right length[usaully at 1 and half inches]its got a pointy end with a spring and is adjusted by turning it.Also it wouldnt hurt to change the map and oxy sensors cos they all work in unison.oxy is the spark plug looking thing in the front exhaust and map is in engine bay with a 3pin multi plug and vacuum hse.Hope thats some help,,,,,Brian Impala
