running extra accumulators
« on: December 14, 2009, 10:17:49 PM »
Evening guys.
Im new to the hydraulics game and was wondering how i run another set of accumulators to the front of my splitscreen??
I have this setup (not driven yet) running one accu per ram.

Im guessing i just run the other two accus inline before or after the original two...is this right??

Yes correct but why do you think you'll need more than 1 per ram?

Ive spoke to Ray at rayvern and because  my suspension is torsion bar/leaves he reckons it will still ride like shite with one per ram and suggested two.
When the van is low it rides fine, because its obviously riding on the spring of the torsion leaves.raise it up past that and its just riding on the accumulators.
I think ray was saying its something to do with the fact the front of the van is quite light compared to the big yank tanks.
Does this sound right?? :)

Hi dickie ive got a vw type3 with hydraulics. im currently running one accumulator to the front rams and one for the rears and it drives really well and smooth.i think its best to get your van back on the road and see how it drives.

ive been advised never run the system fully dropped or full raised case there no movment for the fluid  therefore the accumlators cant work leaving u to drive on soild rams

Fully dropped my front rams have about two inches travel left and the van will then be using the original suspension more (as this is what my beam and rear springplates are set at for driving height)
Im about to have some rams made, possibly by ray, that will give me about the 2 inches left on full drop :)

At full drop my front beam is sat on the floor. At ride height i raise it about 2 1/2 inches all round from full drop

accumulators will only work with enough weight on them. Ray is right about the front being light but adding more accumulators wont alter that, they will help a bit as you will be increasing the surface area that the oil had to push on but what you need to do is to increase the effective weight on the accs you already have.
Do this by removing the torsion bars altogether and replacing them with a pair of high tensile bars. I used to make mine so that one end is in a bronze bush so you still have independantness [?].
You will get a good quality ride doing this

Ohh i see..
Makes perfect sense now, apart from the bush bit ???
So you take out the torsion leaves in the front (obviously take off the two toothed adjuster plates in the middle of the beam) and replace with a solid bar that the torsion arms will attach to??
dont suppose you have any pics of the bush set up do you?
cheers

the bars you need are sold by red 9 design as part of there coil over conversion http://www.red9design.co.uk/type2.htm
but i think they sell them separately or you could make your beam free floating by removing the adjuster plates and studs from the adjusters then refit the studs with some thread lock so they cant work loose.this allows your torsion bars to rotate enough for your requirements.if you need more info on doing this ring me on 07830039544 Damien
