My Mac Struts (not for the traffiic dont worrie)
« on: May 11, 2010, 04:09:44 PM »

using the OEM mount from the strut had a piece of tube to make up the difference then it was welded to fix it in place

then i had a bit of threaded bar for the top of the strut that is held in with grade 66 stud lock

thats not guna snap at any point!!!!

Yes i cant reaplce it il have to make a new unit!!! yes it has been honed as it warped 1000th of a mm

there is a "U" shape notch taken out of the rear for a hose

when it was welded it had a stright connector on the ram then u just screw a 90 degree connector on there with a hose  therefore it misses the drive shaft

that looks good Tony :)
use a pair of jamming nuts on the top mount. something to make sure the top collar cant come loose would be good too.................. maybe drill it for a grub screw?

yea, that'l work, idealy, the thread would be part of the shaft as id doubt the threaded bar would have the same strength, but you should be fine. have you limited the stroke? could you not maybe find an off the shelf ram more suited to begin with. the rams we use dont need honed either as they work by displacement. just an idea, no point giving yourself extra work.

and by the time you've adapted all this and run about, are you realy saving much over buying a rayvern (or similar)  ram at around 100quid each designed for the purpose?

100quid each per ram £400 before i even start buying other stuff.. not really summin im prepared to pay when thease work perfectly to be honest the rayvern rams arnt much different any way

pretty much what ive done wouldnt u say.. id say mine are slighty stronger

responce

yea, but you wouldnt use 4 of them rams on your average car, only the front. just saying by the time you've bought your ram, machined it, honed it, limited the stroke (which you will need to do to combat the side load) and run about after it all is it worth doing? not nessecarily saying rayvern rams, but with what your having to do there you'd be as well having a batch machined from scratch.

years ago i would have done shit like that to save a few quid, but fuck it, if your selling them to sum1 else, just buy the right thing and charge em the extra few quid, get your money for doing nothing rather than wanking about

I would agree with the threaded bar bit............. I would always use a longer rod to able to machine it as one piece but I dont see that as a problem if you have used 8.8 studding.

displacment is a definate NO for McPh struts. Its just plain silly to even think about them You need AT LEAST the support from a good gland bush AND a set of tri pack seals Have to say a STeerforth sourced ram would be a better starting point than  a US one but I see no major poblem with what you have done.

As I said at the start of the "UK supplies" topic these are my opinions.
Does that make it right and another option wrong........................... ?

I went into struts and how I made them in the ram section .
