anyone know about turbo diesels?
« on: December 28, 2006, 02:12:10 PM »
the turbo is sucking up(and running on) oil out of the engine, there is oil around the turbo and black smoke bellowing out the back(on high revs)........ don't know dcik all about diesel turbos so i'm assuming the worse and the turbos shagged and needs replacing?

......... but .........

what if something else is shagged and thats caused the dimise of this turbo and if not fixed could make the replacement turbo have the same fate.

any thoughts?

The oil seels are fucked on the turbo as you know but doesn't meen the turbo's shagged you may be able to replace the oil seal.

As for out else causing the seal to leek.

Well the only thing that springs to mind is running it with too mutch oil hence over preasurising the engine bursting seals, very unlikely just general wear and tear..........

Oh and if you do the job yourself dont forget to rynse and clean out all your induction pipes ect espiesialy the intercooler.

the turbo seals are located in the turbo core  ,, ,, ,, you need to remove the compresser houseing and exhaust houseing which should leave you with compresser wheel exhaust wheel and core  ,, you need to remove the compresser wheel which should allow you to slide the main shaft and exaust wheel out  check for damage on the shaft   (ive had them on cossys turbos where the shaft breaks )  ,, dont forget to get a service kit which will have everything you need in   ,,, good luck ant

found this "family turbo" list

http://http://www.dieselevante.it/turbochargers.asp?idfam=GT1544S

now i reckons all the turbos are the same and each one differs with the manifolds etc..... does that sound about right?..... could save me a alot of £ if i can get one of these and bolt all my bits bobs to it.

example:

i've got a 028145701L (on the t4) and i've found a 028145701T (audi 80) on ebay... might work?

swaping sounds good

b ut if the audi on eis 2nd hand you may be in the same boat soon..........

looking at the image there is only one seal between the two "halves"........ would be simple enough to change if you can get one as long as you are carefull with torques and cleanliness
