hydros on a bug?
« on: May 06, 2007, 11:53:15 AM »
ok took this system of a 72 bug and going to install on my oval rat look

where could i get the adaptors to convert the shocks to the correct type? it would only be a screw on eye if you know what i mean.

the system i was told can move front up dpwn, and back up and down but is very....very hard on the road- what do i need to add to make it a bit more driveable

also the bug is a 6 volter, how can i wire up the apparatus so i can run a very quick lift drop system? i take it i would have to have couple of 12 v batteries etc and some sort of split charging system or would i have to upgrade whole car to 12v.

just outta nosiness- what would i need to make this system bounce on the front? or would i need new system?

for really quick moves you would need to run the pump at 24v or 36v,
by the looks of it you have accumulators so the ride should be ok (may need some gas letting out?)
as far as hopping goes best left to the yank tanks unless your happy with a bent car....
maybe better waiting for some answers off someone with more experience than me though as i'm fairly new to juice....

dude those are accumulators, most prob one for the frt one for the back.

if you put the car at stock height, take the screw cap off the accumulator and you will find a grub screw using a allen key very very slowly undo until you can hear a hiss, the frt or back of the car will start to drop, let it drop about an inch no more tighten grub screw and take it for a spin if still harsh repeat the process..... if theres no hiss or you let to much pressure out the accum.it will need recharging.

and because you've got accum. you won't get it hoppin.... chippin if your lucky.

also most peeps who run hydros don't have the batts plumbed into the alternater or any split charge systems.... the hydros are ran off their own batts so in your case you can keep the car at 6v and the hydros at how many batts you can get in really.... just means youve got to  find a way to charge your hydro batts...... but thats a problem we all have had to solve. You can get 24v 36v chargers on ebay.

speaking from experience, the front of a bug is so light you will never get the accumulators to work efficiently, i let nearly all the gas out of them in my bug and the front was still sketchy.not meaning to sound negative, you may have more success!

Welcome to the wonderful world of juiced bugs!

1. Contact Derrie from max hydraulics about your rams - a local machine shop should be able to adapt the top but check there's not something that musn't be overlooked.

1a. you may find that another 2 accumulators will at least make the back ride ok when they are adjusted to suit,,-as mentioned the front's lack of weight does not help the accumulators work at their best

2. You could try adding a flow contol valve before each accumulator to adjust it's "damping"if you are getting if you are getting the 'keeps-bouncing-after-each-little-bump-in-the-road' feeling.

3.you will not get the front to hop.(really)

4. putting the batteries in the front may help add the weight that the accumulators need to work at their best , BUT remember that the front lower mounts are the weak point of any torsion bar beetle.

I had all the hydraulic components under the bonnet in mine at one point and it make no difference. Bugs are too light for Acc's to make a comfy ride. Keep an eye on all your bushes and ball joints regularly too! I even snapped bolts that held the beam on while riding mine too hard

To get a good quick movment on the front of the bug you can replace the leaves in the beam with a bar designed to tie the training arms without restricting them. Max used to sell em but I'm not sure where you could get them these days?

Now air on a bug ... with a cantilever system ... that might just get me back in to veedubs one day
